After Chrysler's Imperial brand was discontinued in 1975, the Imperial was sold as the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham from 1976 to 1978. Well known owners include fetish model, designer, burlesque performer and socialite Dita Von Teese, who drives a 1939 model.

History

The Chrysler Fifth Avenue began as a submodel of the New Yorker in 1979, after the nameplate was shifted to the Chrysler R platform. In 1982, the New Yorker (and the Fifth Avenue trim) moved to the LeBaron's M-body. This M-body New Yorker used Chrysler's 318 in³ engine.

In 1983, the New Yorker name moved to the front-wheel drive Chrysler E platform, the beginning of the extended K-car years. The E-platform New Yorker came loaded with "state of the art" '80s technology, featuring a digital dashboard and the infamous Electronic Voice Alert. The New Yorker was moved again to the front wheel drive Chrysler C platform for 1988, although the New Yorker Turbo stayed on the E-body. The New Yorker Turbo would be the last New Yorker equipped with a turbocharger. The New Yorker was marketed as a contemporary and technologically advanced luxury car aimed for those who wanted the style and content of a premium sedan, but didn't want to empty the wallet along the way. The New Yorker came optional with sound systems, interior (including leather seating designed by renowned leather designer Mark Cross) , steering wheel covers and also an optional sunroof. The model came standard with reclining seats, and a climate control. (Air conditioning or A/C). While the Fifth Avenue continued as an M-body, it rejoined the New Yorker in 1990 (although the Fifth Avenue was still on a stretched platform).

The last generation of the New Yorker continued with front wheel drive and was introduced at the 1992 North American International Auto Show in Detroit for the 1994 model year as an LH-car, similar to the Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision, Chrysler LHS, and Chrysler Concorde. The exterior of it was almost completely identical to that of the LHS.

New Yorker / LHS

The New Yorker was seen as a more luxurious version of the LHS, with extra chrome trim, a leather front bench seat, and a suspension tuned for a softer ride. Although the LHS shows similar body styling to the New Yorker, it lacked many details, after all it was the sister-ship to the New Yorker, but a lesser car in the long run. Chrysler's choice of paint and colors for the New Yorker varied, but stayed identical with the LHS, the most common paint scheme for the New Yorker (and LHS) is a two-tone paint. From the car's door trim up was the main color, and below the door trim was the secondary color. Chrysler did roll New Yorkers off the assembly line with a mono-tone paint scheme, but more two-tone models were produced, therefore making the mono-tone paint scheme somewhat of a rarity.
